Subscription Facts and FAQ

The NFHS Network School Broadcast Program (SBP), powered by PlayOn! Sports, brings your school the capability to broadcast live coverage of your school sports, graduations, news shows, guest speakers, interviews, award ceremonies, and more.

Subscription passes are required to watch sporting events when they air live and then for 72 hours after the live broadcast (if the event is available on demand).  After 72 hours, sporting events are free of charge to watch on demand.  Subscribers have access to all content at NFHSnetwork.com, including thousands of playoff, tournament, and championship events, as well as on our NFHS Network mobile app available on iPhone and Android.

Why subscription?

Schools can participate in the SBP for free and generate revenue from viewers purchasing subscriptions to access live sporting events and other activities.

Where will our school’s content stream?

All video streaming will be hosted on the NFHS Network.  Users will be able to access video content by going directly to your school-branded channel on NFHSNetwork.com.

Can I embed our school’s events on other sites?

Schools cannot embed any subscription events on other sites until 72 hours after the event’s initial broadcast.  Free content, including non-sporting events and highlights, may be embedded anywhere.

What events should our school produce for subscribers?

We encourage you to produce events that represent your school and student athletes. Try to produce events throughout the year, and cover a variety of different sports and activities.  This will not only ensure a rich and diverse library of content for your long-term subscribers but will also showcase the best of what your school has to offer to the community.

What are the requirements?

Your school is responsible for providing its own laptop, video capture device, and broadcast equipment.  PlayOn can provide you with a laptop and video capture device for a one-time fee of $1,000.  An Internet connection for live streaming your school’s events is also required.  PlayOn! Sports will provide the software, Web portal, support, and tools to help your school produce events and market the program to the community.

This is not a requirement, but we recommend 15 live sporting events a year – 5 for each season.  There is no minimum or maximum number of events you can produce.

What kind of laptop and equipment will our school need to broadcast events?

The PlayOn software is PC-based that runs Windows and requires a laptop that meets the following specs:

    • i5 Processor @ 2.4 GHz or faster
    • Minimum of 3 GB of RAM
    • 7200 RPM hard drive
    • 160 GB minimum of storage space
You will also need an Elgato Video Capture Device 10020840, available at Amazon.com and other online retailers.  We also suggest having a camera with AV/composite output and an AV/composite cable.
Will all of our school’s events cost money to watch?

All non-sports are accessible for free, but schools can choose to designate certain non-sports (graduation, award ceremonies, etc.) as subscription events.

Subscription passes are required to watch sporting events when they air live and then for 72 hours after the live broadcast (if the event is available on demand).  After 72 hours, sporting events are free of charge to watch on demand.

How much does a subscription cost?

There are currently four retail subscription options.  All subscription options are time-based, not specific event-based.  Once viewers purchase a Pass, they will have access to all video content available on the NFHS Network for the duration of that Pass.

    • The Day Pass offers 24 hours of full access starting at $9.95*
    • The Monthly Pass offers 30 days of full access to users for $14.95*
    • The 6 Month Pass offers 180 days of full access to users for $59.95*†
    • The 12 Month Pass offers 365 days of full access to users for $119.95*†

*Prices subject to change.

†Pricing starts Fall 2014.

Does our community get any discount?

We want to make sure your content is accessible to everyone in your community, so we’d like to offer your school the opportunity to provide your fans with discounted Annual subscription passes.  For more information, please talk to your Account/Territory Manager.

How much will our school make?

Schools participating in the School Broadcast Program that produce their own content will receive 50 percent of the net proceeds from subscription sales of the events their school produces.  When viewers purchase a Monthly, 6 Month, or 12 Month Pass they have the option to choose a specific school to support; that school will share in the net proceeds from these purchases.

However, when a viewer purchases a Day Pass, the school producing that event will receive the share of the subscription proceeds.

Ultimately, the amount of revenue generated by your school is determined by how many subscriptions your school sells.  PlayOn! Sports will provide tools to help you spread the word and start selling subscriptions.  PlayOn! Sports’ marketing team is available to answer any questions you might have on how to sell subscription passes.  Please speak to your Territory Manager or Account Manager to get more details on the materials and support available to you.
